DetailsYule Riding, The York Waits, with singer Deborah Catterall, return to the Square Chapel with a programme of seasonal music from the Renaissance.
On the 21st of December, the Feast of St Thomas, the original Sheriffs of York processed around the City declaring an amnesty to all ne’er-do-wells for the Twelve Days of Christmas, accompanied by the Waits who serenaded with their shawms and sackbuts.
Today’s Waits revived this tradition over 30 years ago and in this concert they draw on festive medieval and renaissance music from around Europe to celebrate the start of Yule.
As well as the louder shawms, sackbuts, curtals and bagpipes the group employs a vast array of period instruments including hurdy gurdy, fiddles, harp, crumhorns, recorders, flutes, portative organ and gittern. Chorales, dances, noels, lullabies, and early folk songs make up this rich and diverse repertoire.
