Stage at the Lake: Long Summer Evenings & Laid Back Festival Vibes

If you’re looking for the perfect reason to visit Halifax this August, Stage at the Lake is it!

Set in the beautiful surroundings of Shibden Park, this feel‑good festival combines live music, outdoor performances, and summer vibes – making it a brilliant focus for a long weekend in Calderdale.

Here’s how to make the most of it 👇

🎭 What is Stage at the Lake?

Stage at the Lake is a lively, family-friendly outdoor festival that brings together a mix of live entertainment in a relaxed, scenic setting. Held right by the lake in Shibden Park, it’s ideal whether you’re coming with friends, family, or planning a laid‑back weekend escape.

The line‑up is varied, meaning there’s something for everyone – so you can pick and choose according to your interests.

🎶 Choosing Your Show: Something for Everyone

One of the best things about Stage at the Lake is its diverse programme. Depending on what you’re into, you can pick a show (or two!) that suits your style:

Families will love shows designed with younger audiences in mind – perfect for a fun day out during the school holidays. Everyone’s favourite gardener, Mr Bloom from CBeebies, takes the stage on Thursday daytime for the Seedlings Play Garden, followed by a family rave with Hacienda DJ Jon Da Silva!

Theatre fans can enjoy open-air performances, which feel extra special in the park setting. Thursday’s ‘Summer Night of Musicals’  kicks off the festival in style with a glamorous evening concert celebrating the magic of the West End, led by acclaimed musical director Matthew J Loughran (Elf, Evita, Wicked, Les Misérables). Expect a dazzling setlist of iconic songs from Wicked, Les Misérables and many more beloved musicals, performed by West End stars.

Comedy lovers can settle in for standout night of live comedy on the Friday night. Laughter at the Lake brings a specially curated line-up of big-name talent to Shibden Park for one night only – from Louise Young, Josh Jones, Rich Hall and Russell Kane (line-up subject to change), the night showcases sharp, distinctive stand-up from some of the UK’s most exciting comedy voices.

Music lovers will find everything from tribute acts to live bands to world-class orchestral music. ‘Debut at the Lake’ on the Friday brings together breakthrough talent from across Calderdale and West Yorkshire for a full day of fresh sounds, festival vibes and the chance to discover your next favourite artist. Then on the Saturday, ‘Proms at the Lake’ brings you a grand open-air concert of classical music performed by the English Chamber Orchestra, with special guests Halifax Choral Society and Northern Ballet (to perform an excerpt from their ballet ‘Gentleman Jack’)!

The festival closes with a nod to Calderdale’s filming roots, with a special outdoor screening of Brassed Off, brought vividly to life with a live score from the world-renowned Grimethorpe Colliery Band. Returning to Halifax 30 years after the film was shot here, this is a homecoming moment brimming with Yorkshire pride.

So whatever your vibe, simply bring a picnic blanket, soak up the atmosphere, and enjoy live performances in the sunshine.
