    The 2018 Halifax Heritage Festival is taking place between Saturday 18th August and Sunday 16th September across the town centre, local villages, and local market towns. Co-ordinated by Hal;ifax Busienss Improvemnet district (B.I.D) approx 20 heritage sites are hosting events and activities during the festival with over 60 walks, talks, tours, viewings and exhibitions taking place. Most events are free of charge to attend, a limited few have a small cost or donation requirement. You can expect family activities, children’s events, evening talks and lunch time walks, with historical lectures, ghostly tales, hidden gems, and uncovered tombs being included in the Festival. Running alongside the already renowned Heritage Open Days, the Halifax Heritage Festival offers many unique events taking place, there’s something for all ages. For the first time this year, the festival is extending beyond the original long weekend, giving you even more opportunity to get involved in heritage events!

    Enjoy a one and a half mile guided walk around Sowerby Bridge, looking at snippets of the town’s history and heritage including; the deepest lock in the country, the ‘Tower of Spite’, the town’s Brontë connection, the company that powered the world, the local punishment for scolding wives & brewers of bad ale, ‘Happy Valley’ filming locations and more! Just watch out for the Geese… Meet Chris Evans from the VisitCalderdale Tourism Team at 11am on Wednesdays in August and September by the picnic tables outside The Moorings, Sowerby Bridge Wharf Canal basin, HX6 2AG. The route follows pavements with a short stretch of canal towpath. The route may vary depending on weather and the ability of those wishing to participate. Routes can be made suitable for wheelchair users, please contact Chris in advance for advice at tourism@calderdale.gov.uk. The walk is best suited for adult ages. Children aged under 16 must be under close supervision of their guardian/parent at all times. No dogs on this walk, please. The walk lasts for approx 1 hour 15 minutes. Parking is available at Sowerby Bridge Wharf Canal Basin HX6 2AG, or nearby at Stanley Street pay & display car park HX6 2AF. The walk costs £3 per person. Please ring, email or call in person into Halifax Visitor Information Centre to book your places (the walks are limited to 15 people per walk) and then turn up for the walk and pay Chris on the day (please try and have the correct money with you).     The tour has been organised by Halifax Minster with the support of businesses and heritage sites across Halifax.

    Take part to delve into the fascinating history of the town and perhaps uncover some surprises along the way.

    Walking Tours (1.5 hours Start at the Town Hall)

These include Mill owners, Chartists, Waterloo Soldiers, Great War fatalities, Nurses, nonconformist clergy, organ builders, and even murder victims. The cemetery - of European significance, has been rescued from jungle conditions over the past eighteen years and is cared for by its Friends, a public charity.

From Dusty Springfield, Shirley Bassey, Rod Stewart, Iggy Pop to Joy Division, Pulp, The Cure, The Jacksons, The Stone Roses, James, The Waterboys, Florence + the Machine; the list of artists who have played the town is long and diverse. The trail is being relaunched in June with new plaques and updated map, leaflet and website. The tour on July 1st is one of only a couple of guided tours this year . £5 per person.
