    This splendid Grade II* listed Victorian market hall was voted the best in Britain in 2008. Come and enjoy the hustle, bustle and traditional splendour of a thriving retail market with a warm and friendly atmosphere. The impressive and historic Halifax Borough Market was built between 1891 and 1896 and was officially opened by the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George V and Queen Mary). As a first time visitor to this award-winning market, you could be forgiven for thinking that you had stumbled on to the set of a period TV drama. Decor and atmosphere combine to create a shopping experience that just can't be matched by mundane and soulless out-of-town supermarkets. Alongside the outstanding traditional family butchers and fruit and vegetable stalls which have passed down through generations, are the new stall holders tempting our taste buds with a bounty of exotic produce from the continent. Nor will the markets's fishmongers disappoint. You can treat your inner child with toffees, fudge, boiled sweets, cakes and brandy snaps. Sandwiches, pies, olives and chorizo can be found alongside haberdashers, vibrant flower shops, perfumers, leather goods, books, underwear, CDs, DVDs, hardware, fancy dress and more! With several cafes and coffee shops where you can stop for cuppa and a butty (go on, have cake too) you can easily refuel to carry on shopping.     An exclusive chance to see some of the costumes designed by Tom Pye for Sally Wainwright’s TV series Gentleman Jack. The series about the life of Anne Lister, was filmed largely at her home of Shibden Hall, managed by Calderdale Museums Service. On display at Bankfield Museum are a number of the costumes and props from the series, worn and used by actors including Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle. At Bankfield you can also see original clothing from the period of Gentleman Jack in the new Fashion Gallery on the top floor. The costumes have been kindly loaned for display by Lookout Point Productions with assistance from designer Tom Pye. FREE admission. Friday 12th July 2019 until Saturday 26th October 2019.

    A four hour walk from Halifax climbing slowly up Old Bank to Shibden, to recreate Anne Lister's estate in 1832. On 7th May, she returned home from her travels despondent, betrayed by yet one more woman's marriage plans. Then reacquaintance with neighbouring heiress Ann Walker of Lightcliffe changed her life forever. Anne Lister deployed all her considerable skills to enthral and seduce this wealthy young woman - all out of sight of Halifax's prying eyes. Meet Jill Liddington at 11.30am - details of meeting place will be given when tickets are booked. Walking boots/shoes are advised, and bring packed lunch/snacks. The walk includes short readings from Nature's Domain, and ends at 3.30 pm with Q&A plus tea and cake at the Meerside Cafe. Bus back to Halifax. So this is a linear walk.
