A superb way to go walking in Calderdale - The Calderdale Way is a 50 mile (80 km) walk exploring the hills, moors and valleys of Calderdale that recently celebrated its 40th anniversary.
It is an ‘up and down’ journey with few level sections. However, the higher levels provide some exceptionally fine panoramic views. The main and link routes to the valley bottom are designed so that they can be completed in short stages.
The Calderdale Way encircles Halifax, Hebden Bridge and Todmorden, following old packhorse ways across the open gritstone hillsides with sections of traditional stone causeway, passing through hillside villages and old mill towns on the banks of the River Calder.
There are numerous link paths which connect the Calderdale Way to the valley floor. There are medieval settlements at Lumbutts and Mankinholes, and Withens Gate, where the Pennine Way crosses. A short diversion along the Pennine Way takes in the popular walk to the 100ft monument, Stoodley Pike.
The full length of the route is 51.39 miles, with a total climb of 22 metres at a climb rate of 43 metres per mile. This makes a flat equivalent distance of 57.49 miles.
The long period of hot weather has meant there is an increased risk of moorland fires in Calderdale. Please take care when out and about in moorlands around Calderdale and West Yorkshire. You can find more advice here. The burning of moorland is not a victimless crime. If you see anything suspicious report it to crimestoppers 0800 555111. #moorlandfires @WestYorksPolice @West_Yorks_FRS

Staffed by volunteers, the shop opens every Saturday at Staups Lea Farm from 10am to 2pm. You will find meat, baked goods, eggs, cheese, milk, vegetables, wine, beer, and a range of craft products – all reared, grown or made nearby. There is often a chance to meet the producers themselves, who play an active part in running the shop, and to find out more about how they work. We also stock a small range of ethically-sourced dried and tinned goods such as rice and coffee to stock up your store cupboard. Staups Lea Farm is located in breathtaking countryside, just over a hundred metres away from The Calderdale Way walking route.

Meet at 2pm opposite the Town Hall pediment on Halifax Road, OL14 5AQ Todmorden Town Hall straddles the Walsden Water and was situated in both Lancashire and Yorkshire until the county boundary was moved on January 1st 1888. Designed by John Gibson of Westminster, this Grade 1 listed building holds a strong place in the hearts of local people. Most iconic, from the outside, is the pediment. The carved stonework has two central female figures on a pedestal. The one on the left represents Lancashire (cotton spinning industry) and the one on the right Yorkshire (engineering and agriculture). Below the two figures are different friezes of the industries coming together to prosper on the border. Inside the building there is an old Magistrate’s Court which now serves as the Todmorden Town Council Chamber. The ballroom upstairs spans the length of the building and holds many memories for those who have attended the variety of events held in the Town Hall for over 140 years.
