Free ‘Taster Tours’ are available for individuals and couples on the first Sunday of the month (except January). Meet at 2pm opposite the Town Hall pediment on Halifax Road, OL14 5AQ Todmorden Town Hall straddles the Walsden Water and was situated in both Lancashire and Yorkshire until the county boundary was moved on January 1st 1888. Designed by John Gibson of Westminster, this Grade 1 listed building holds a strong place in the hearts of local people. Most iconic, from the outside, is the pediment. The carved stonework has two central female figures on a pedestal. The one on the left represents Lancashire (cotton spinning industry) and the one on the right Yorkshire (engineering and agriculture). Below the two figures are different friezes of the industries coming together to prosper on the border. Inside the building there is an old Magistrate’s Court which now serves as the Todmorden Town Council Chamber. The ballroom upstairs spans the length of the building and holds many memories for those who have attended the variety of events held in the Town Hall for over 140 years.

Square Chapel, Copper Auditorium, doors 12, start 12.15pm to 1:30 pm Tickets: £10.50 Anne Lister followed a long and winding trail of women, before finding Ann Walker and taking the Sacrament at Holy Trinity / Goodramgate. Their relationship went far beyond the dormered room the two young women shared at the Manor School in York, and finally ended at the same asylum Ann Walker was forced to enter. Join author Patricia Hughes at the Copper Auditorium at Square Chapel as she discusses this very important chapter in Anne’s storied past, as described in her book, “The Early Life of Miss Anne Lister and the Curious Tale of Miss Eliza Raine”. About the Author: Patricia Hughes worked with Dorothy Thompson at Birmingham University's Department of Modern History in the UK to decode and translate the coded passages of Anne Lister's vast, detailed journal.

    2pm - 3.30pm

Join Halifax-based writer Clara Barley, as she discusses her novel, The Moss House, about neighbouring landowners Anne Lister and Ann Walker.

Barley's fictional re-telling explores how the women's lives became entwined in a passionate, forbidden relationship and retreated to the Moss House, their private sanctuary away from an unaccepting world.

Barley will discuss where truth meets fiction about Anne Lister - lesbian, diarist, landowner, scholar, traveller and mountaineer, and how she adapted the true story into a novel.

The talk will be followed by a Q&A.
