    Free ‘Taster Tours’ are available for individuals and couples on the first Sunday of the month (except January). Meet at 2pm opposite the Town Hall pediment on Halifax Road, OL14 5AQ Todmorden Town Hall straddles the Walsden Water and was situated in both Lancashire and Yorkshire until the county boundary was moved on January 1st 1888. Designed by John Gibson of Westminster, this Grade 1 listed building holds a strong place in the hearts of local people. Most iconic, from the outside, is the pediment. The carved stonework has two central female figures on a pedestal. The one on the left represents Lancashire (cotton spinning industry) and the one on the right Yorkshire (engineering and agriculture). Below the two figures are different friezes of the industries coming together to prosper on the border. Inside the building there is an old Magistrate’s Court which now serves as the Todmorden Town Council Chamber. The ballroom upstairs spans the length of the building and holds many memories for those who have attended the variety of events held in the Town Hall for over 140 years.

    ...but we're only going to west Hipperholme from Beacon Hill. We'll look at the transport links from the middle ages to the present with views of Halifax, two major construction projects of their time, down the old Dark Lane also known as the Magna Via and into Hipperholme, returning by Mytholm to Shibden Park. There are two gentle climbs and a long descent. Meet Ian Philip at 2.15pm by the upper car park of Shibden Hall on the Shibden Hall Road / Halifax Old road.

    A four hour walk from Halifax climbing slowly up Old Bank to Shibden, to recreate Anne Lister's estate in 1832. On 7th May, she returned home from her travels despondent, betrayed by yet one more woman's marriage plans. Then reacquaintance with neighbouring heiress Ann Walker of Lightcliffe changed her life forever. Anne Lister deployed all her considerable skills to enthral and seduce this wealthy young woman - all out of sight of Halifax's prying eyes. Meet Jill Liddington at 11.30am - details of meeting place will be given when tickets are booked. Walking boots/shoes are advised, and bring packed lunch/snacks. The walk includes short readings from Nature's Domain, and ends at 3.30 pm with Q&A plus tea and cake at the Meerside Cafe. Bus back to Halifax. So this is a linear walk. PRE-BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL and it will not be possible to just turn up on the day. This walk is £4 per head. PRE-BOOKING ARRANGEMENTS Halifax Visitor Centre, The Piece Hall, Halifax HX1 1RE.     Total Tours of Todmorden Town Hall’ include access to the secret spaces of Todmorden Town Hall, including the former Caretaker’s Flat and holding cell.

    Total Tours start at 2pm and last approx 2.5 hours.

    Tours are £6.50 per person and include tea, coffee and biscuits. Tickets can be booked by emailing info@visittodmorden.co.uk 

    Please note; due to a spiral staircase and steep down staircase to the cellar, we cannot accept anyone into the Caretaker's Flat and cellar who has a mobility problem, walking aid, unsuitable footwear, serious health concern or any children aged under 11.
