    Hello and welcome to Robertshaw’s Farm Shop! We are a family owned business based in Thornton, led by owner James Robertshaw. The Robertshaw’s story begins in 1929, when James’s grandfather Harry opened his butchers’ shop in Halifax. James father Andrew Robertshaw would always be at the butchers shop helping his dad out and, in the mid 60’s, he began selling potatoes and vegetables at the side of the road (where our farm shop stands now). In 1974 Andrew Robertshaw opened The Farm shop as a standalone business. James was born and raised at The Farm Shop, working and helping customers from a young age. In 1987, a butchery was added to the shop, and the rest is history. We’re third generation farmers and butchers. The shop is situated on our working sheep farm and we produce our own prime lambs. We rear over 200 breeding ewes and produce just over 350 lambs a year. The lambs we raise on the farm are sold in the shop by our team of 30 butchers who have over 200 years of experience between them, meaning nothing goes to waste, and our customers benefit from fresh, quality meat. We also have great relationships with local farmers, and buy the best quality meat in Yorkshire auction marts. Owner James visits at least three auctions a week, often buying prize winning beasts. We are proactive in using renewable forms of energy available to us and minimising our impact on the environment. We have our own wind turbines on the farm, and a recycling scheme in place for every single item of waste from the farm. We bale cardboard and plastic for recycling and all our fruit and veg is fed back to the animals, meaning nothing goes into landfill. This years we’ll be looking into improving our packaging. Over the next couple of years we are planning to put in a café, extend our Animal Croft, bring more homemade products to our ranges, and lots more… We hope to see you in the shop soon.     Showcasing Calderdale Museums’ fashion and textile collections from ancient Egypt to modern day. Calderdale Museums has one of the best but little known textile collections in the country. There are 17,000 objects, collected from all over the world. The collection began when the museum first opened in 1887. It represents the influence of world textiles on local production as well as how local textiles have been exported around and influenced the world. The collection includes significant objects from Ancient Egypt, The Balkans, China, Japan and the Indian Subcontinent. A range of English embroidery, samplers, costume, court dress, military uniforms, pattern books from West Yorkshire manufacturers and the design archive of Crossley’s Carpets. It represents not just textiles but textile production from spindles to spinning wheels, cards, combs and looms. The new fashion gallery will tell both the story of the production and manufacture of textiles in the local area and how those textiles were then used. This new gallery replaces the 'For King and Country' exhibition on the top floor at Bankfield. 2019 will also see a range of related talks, tours and events. FREE admission.

    Kids visiting the award-winning Halifax attraction will be treated to vibrant visual effects and stunning sounds thanks to cutting-edge design and technology, including giant motion-tracking projections capturing children’s movements as they interact with what they see.

    This features in the exhibition alongside touch-triggered 3D shapes and luminous touch-sensitive pillars of light.

    A visit to Digital Dimensions, housed in Eureka!’s ground-floor Spark Gallery, will allow families to:

    • Test memories and coordination in a game against a series of 3D musical cubes – working together to remember patterns to trigger sounds and a colourful chain reaction!
    • Weave their way through luminous touch-sensitive colour-changing pillars of light - find the master pole to reset the colours
    • Step into a colourful motion-capture tunnel of with astounding visual effects
    • Open some truly magical doors to a series of digital dimensions.

    Digital Dimensions has been created by first year students studying for a BA (Hons) in Live Visual Design & Production at Backstage Academy, based at Wakefield’s Production Park, a community of live events businesses behind the staging of Beyoncé & Jay-Z and Take That arena tours.

    Digital Dimensions is included in the price of admission, or free to Eureka! Annual Pass holders.

    September 2019 is the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War. Calderdale was directly affected: men and women were conscripted for military and industrial service; industry was placed on a war footing and many workers took on Civil Defence and Home Guard duties. The area did not escape unscathed, there were 11 bombing incidents recorded and 11 people were killed. On 24 December 1944 a German V1 Flying Bomb (commonly known as ‘Doodlebugs’) landed in a field at Little Tooting Farm, Hubberton, Sowerby. Extensive blast damage made the farmhouse uninhabitable for some time and broke windows a mile away. The farmhouse occupants received cuts from broken glass. The photograph shows the Auxiliary Fire Service team, which attended the incident, along with the police and ambulance service. FREE admission. The exhibition runs from Saturday 8th June to Saturday 30th November 2019 .

    An exclusive chance to see some of the costumes designed by Tom Pye for Sally Wainwright’s TV series Gentleman Jack. The series about the life of Anne Lister, was filmed largely at her home of Shibden Hall, managed by Calderdale Museums Service. On display at Bankfield Museum are a number of the costumes and props from the series, worn and used by actors including Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle. At Bankfield you can also see original clothing from the period of Gentleman Jack in the new Fashion Gallery on the top floor. The costumes have been kindly loaned for display by Lookout Point Productions with assistance from designer Tom Pye. FREE admission. Friday 12th July 2019 until Saturday 26th October 2019.

    Have you heard the one about the Halifax Comedy Festival returning this October?

    Fans of live comedy are in for a real treat when The Halifax Comedy Festival returns for its fifth year this October!

    Dave Gorman will be opening the festival at the Victoria Theatre.  The man behind Dave TV’s hit show Modern Life is Goodish is back on the road with a brand new live show ‘With Great PowerPoint Comes Great ResponsibilityPoint’ on Friday 18 October.

    Superb world-class stand up comes from Jimeoin; the Irishman from Australia, acclaimed worldwide as one of live comedy’s true masters, on Saturday 19 October.

    For budding comedians ready to take on the spotlight there is a 2 day comedy workshop on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October from veteran of the international comedy circuit Silky White, who is also appearing on Saturday 19 October.

    There’s lots of comedy for all the Family this year, with Javier Jarquin – The Card Ninja on Saturday 19 October, Jay Foreman who will be returning with his Disgusting Songs for Revolting Children on Sunday 20 October, following his sell out show last year, and Jeddy Bear and Gary are bringing their comedic retelling of the Teddy Bear’s picnic on Saturday 26 October. Grownups will also love the adult version of the show later that evening!

    No subject is taboo from the Hormonal Housewives who will be blasting their witty way through a catalogue of women’s bits in this ultimate ladies night on Wednesday 23 October. Starring Suzanne Shaw, Josephine Partridge and Julie Coombe.

    The Victoria Theatre’s regular monthly Dick & Liddy’s Comedy Club will be taking its usual spot on Friday 25 October and is your chance to get close to some amazing stand-up talent.

    Not to forget the festival’s annual comedy jaunt to the wonderful surroundings of Halifax Minster – a unique setting for live comedy and this year you have the option of 2 great events! Thursday 24 October promises to be an eccentric night of musical humour with the London Philharmonic Skiffle Orchestra featuring funny songs, crazy costumes and virtuoso music!

    Bubble, bubble, there’s toil and trouble at Eureka! this October half term, as a coven of witches and a convocation of wizards have flown in to use the children’s museum for their official Halloween recruitment drive. Bring your budding Harry Potters and Mildred Hubbles to Eureka! from Saturday 19th October to Sunday 3rd November to discover whether they belong on #TeamWitch or #TeamWizard! The Eureka! Witches and Wizards will be putting apprentice magicians aged 0-11 years through a series of tasks and tests before they pledge allegiance, while mystical characters from Black Knight Historical will be conjuring up some truly magical classes in the Eureka! Theatre. Grab your capes and hats, broomsticks and wands, chant your favourite transportation spell (or, you know, belt up in the back of the family car) and fly over to Eureka! for an enchanting Halloween half-term day out! Spooky fancy dress encouraged! The museum will be opening its doors early at 9.30am on weekdays throughout half-term for eager visitors wanting to get their magic on before lunchtime. All activities are included in the price of admission or free to Eureka! annual pass holders.
