Showcasing Calderdale Museums’ fashion and textile collections from ancient Egypt to modern day. Calderdale Museums has one of the best but little known textile collections in the country. There are 17,000 objects, collected from all over the world. The collection began when the museum first opened in 1887. It represents the influence of world textiles on local production as well as how local textiles have been exported around and influenced the world. The collection includes significant objects from Ancient Egypt, The Balkans, China, Japan and the Indian Subcontinent. A range of English embroidery, samplers, costume, court dress, military uniforms, pattern books from West Yorkshire manufacturers and the design archive of Crossley’s Carpets. It represents not just textiles but textile production from spindles to spinning wheels, cards, combs and looms. The new fashion gallery will tell both the story of the production and manufacture of textiles in the local area and how those textiles were then used. This new gallery replaces the 'For King and Country' exhibition on the top floor at Bankfield. 2019 will also see a range of related talks, tours and events. FREE admission.

    May 25th - November

Kids visiting the award-winning Halifax attraction will be treated to vibrant visual effects and stunning sounds thanks to cutting-edge design and technology, including giant motion-tracking projections capturing children’s movements as they interact with what they see.

This features in the exhibition alongside touch-triggered 3D shapes and luminous touch-sensitive pillars of light.

A visit to Digital Dimensions, housed in Eureka!’s ground-floor Spark Gallery, will allow families to:

    • Test memories and coordination in a game against a series of 3D musical cubes – working together to remember patterns to trigger sounds and a colourful chain reaction!
    • Weave their way through luminous touch-sensitive colour-changing pillars of light - find the master pole to reset the colours
    • Step into a colourful motion-capture tunnel of with astounding visual effects
    • Open some truly magical doors to a series of digital dimensions.

Digital Dimensions has been created by first year students studying for a BA (Hons) in Live Visual Design & Production at Backstage Academy, based at Wakefield’s Production Park, a community of live events businesses behind the staging of Beyoncé & Jay-Z and Take That arena tours.

Digital Dimensions is included in the price of admission, or free to Eureka! Annual Pass holders.

September 2019 is the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War. Calderdale was directly affected: men and women were conscripted for military and industrial service; industry was placed on a war footing and many workers took on Civil Defence and Home Guard duties. The area did not escape unscathed, there were 11 bombing incidents recorded and 11 people were killed. On 24 December 1944 a German V1 Flying Bomb (commonly known as ‘Doodlebugs’) landed in a field at Little Tooting Farm, Hubberton, Sowerby. Extensive blast damage made the farmhouse uninhabitable for some time and broke windows a mile away. The farmhouse occupants received cuts from broken glass. The photograph shows the Auxiliary Fire Service team, which attended the incident, along with the police and ambulance service. FREE admission. The exhibition runs from Saturday 8th June to Saturday 30th November 2019 .
