Showcasing Calderdale Museums’ fashion and textile collections from ancient Egypt to modern day. Calderdale Museums has one of the best but little known textile collections in the country. There are 17,000 objects, collected from all over the world. The collection began when the museum first opened in 1887. It represents the influence of world textiles on local production as well as how local textiles have been exported around and influenced the world. The collection includes significant objects from Ancient Egypt, The Balkans, China, Japan and the Indian Subcontinent. A range of English embroidery, samplers, costume, court dress, military uniforms, pattern books from West Yorkshire manufacturers and the design archive of Crossley’s Carpets. It represents not just textiles but textile production from spindles to spinning wheels, cards, combs and looms. The new fashion gallery will tell both the story of the production and manufacture of textiles in the local area and how those textiles were then used. This new gallery replaces the 'For King and Country' exhibition on the top floor at Bankfield. 2019 will also see a range of related talks, tours and events. FREE admission.

September 2019 is the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War. Calderdale was directly affected: men and women were conscripted for military and industrial service; industry was placed on a war footing and many workers took on Civil Defence and Home Guard duties. The area did not escape unscathed, there were 11 bombing incidents recorded and 11 people were killed. On 24 December 1944 a German V1 Flying Bomb (commonly known as ‘Doodlebugs’) landed in a field at Little Tooting Farm, Hubberton, Sowerby. Extensive blast damage made the farmhouse uninhabitable for some time and broke windows a mile away. The farmhouse occupants received cuts from broken glass. The photograph shows the Auxiliary Fire Service team, which attended the incident, along with the police and ambulance service. FREE admission. The exhibition runs from Saturday 8th June to Saturday 30th November 2019 .

Sat 14th Sept – 11- 3 PM Sun 15th Sept – 11 – 3 PM Sat 21st Sept – 11-3 PM Sun 22nd Sept – 11-3PM FREE TO EXPLORE There is always something new to discover year on year. Come and visit this extraordinary Grade 1 listed Gothic church commissioned by the local industrialist Edward Akroyd 160 years ago. It was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott and considered to be his finest church with exceptional stained glass. Scott also designed the model village Akroydon for Edward Akroyd’s mill workers and the old manor house was later donated to become Bankfield Museum. As part of the anniversary celebrations of The Churches Conservation Trust and the building itself the dedicated volunteer team are working to bring this generally unused building back into the community, to be an exceptional venue for events and exploring the history of the area. ‘TIME & PLACE’ solo art exhibition by Jane Austin Local watercolour artist Jane Austin is holding a third solo exhibition of paintings, this year reflecting the rich heritage of the church, the Akroydon model village and Halifax itself, rooted firmly in the Industrial Revolution. The drawings from several workshops during the year will inspire to take a closer look. Meet the artist and see how she develops her work, recently seen as a winning artist on the BBC 1 series ‘Home Is Where The Art Is’. Once a thriving church it fell into disrepair and was no longer used for regular worship by 1989. However many people still have fond memories of family celebrations and connections with the church which are being gathered into a community project of stories and images, ‘People of All Souls’. Guided Walks A knowledgeable guided walk of the area, with Jackie Butterfield, will leave the church on Sunday 15th Sept at 11 am and Sunday 22nd Sept at 11am taking approximately an hour, inviting a donation of £3.00, bookable through the Halifax Visitor Information Centre, 01422 368725.
