Brighouse’s festive season officially gets underway on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th November with an amazing artisan food and craft market, live music and of course a range of Christmas fun for all the family – including the switch-on of the town’s Christmas lights, all very kindly sponsored by Magic Rock Brewing. The event, which takes over the whole town centre, attracts thousands each year and this year is set to be no exception with over 70 stalls packed with the best locally produced foods and crafts and Father Christmas turning on the Christmas lights on Saturday afternoon. Organised by Brighouse BID, the whole town is part of the event – with carol singing, Christmas dancing and school choirs entertaining crowds throughout the weekend. Highlights of the weekend will include: o Festive singing and dancing on stage at Bradford Road o Carol Singing from local Primary Schools o Morris dancers and Scottish Country dancing in the streets o A Birds of Prey display o Mini Panto productions throughout the weekend o Free face painting o Horse rides o Santa’s Grotto at Overgate Furniture Store o Street entertainers and a street magician o Refreshment Stall run by Brighouse BID with hot chocolate, mulled wine, tea and coffee with all proceeds going to making improvements to Brighouse town centre. On Saturday, the market is open between 10am and 5pm with the town’s Christmas lights being switched on by Father Christmas in his horse drawn sleigh at around 4pm. The market re-opens at 10am on Sunday and runs through until 4pm.

Halifax artist David Smith opens his new exhibition at the Harrison Lord Gallery in Brighouse on Saturday 23rd November. David, a well-established local artist, has created a new style of work for the show. It is inspired by the great LS Lowry, famous for his stick men and mill scenes. David grew up living across the road from busy factories. "As a child I witnessed the ending of the industrial era. Before cameras were as common as they are nowadays, I chose to record my surroundings with paint. The paintings in this exhibition are my memories of that time.” However, they are not mere copies of Lowry’s work. Although inspired by the same subjects David has developed his own style. "Of course, L S Lowry casts his great shadow over everything northern and I think my work gives a very respectful nod to the work of that great man." David Smith will be in the gallery on Saturday November 23rd, 11.30am to 3pm so pop in and have a chat. The exhibition runs for two weeks at the Harrison Lord Gallery, 5 Bradford Rd, Brighouse and is free to enter.

7.30pm By Sue Townsend, directed by Gil Burns In Sue Townsend’s heartfelt comedy, three severely agoraphobic women have left their houses for the first time in years, and made it to a jumble sale. The sale has been organised by their social workers, the young trainee Fliss and the ex-agoraphobic volunteer, Gwenda. As Margaret, Bell-Bell and Katrina prepare to meet the public, armed with the suits of a deceased husband, old sequinned show dresses, a standard lamp, and other bric-a-brac, nerves run high, but a sensitive portrait of the group emerges. Tickets £6 - £10
