Janet and Si...This family run restaurant is famous for its wonderful eclectic food and friendly welcoming atmosphere surrounded by quirky decor. Janet and Simon Baker opened the doors to Gimbals Restaurant in 1995 with the aim of bringing simple but sumptuous, seasonal food to the quaint Yorkshire village of Sowerby Bridge, and that remains their passion today. The cooking at Gimbals is modern yet rustic using wild, organic, locally sourced ingredients as much as possible, which adds a Yorkshire earthiness to the fayre. They create honest dishes, inspired by both classic and more unusual flavour combinations, brought together by the skills of their talented chefs. Janet has a flair for decor and her show stopping finds, such as an actual Blackpool illumination, help to create a seductively decadent restaurant atmosphere and a unique upstairs lounge area. Here one can enjoy artisan cocktails with friends, relax on a chesterfield with an aperitif or sink into a sofa with an after dinner coffee. Whatever the occasion, Gimbals promises to create a truly special evening for you. -

Elder comes from the team behind The Bootleg Belly pop-up restaurants who offer their alternative take on the great British larder. Owner and Head Chef Justin started out in catering at restaurants in London and Leeds, including Head Chef at Kendall's Bistro and Head of Food Development at Friends of Ham. The focus for the team over the last few years has been hosting pop-up restaurants and bringing their street food offering to festivals and events - appearing in random locations across the north of England, Scotland and Wales and testing out flavour cominations of all things British, tasty and different. Elder now brings to Halifax a modern, delicious take on the British menu - open daily serving breakfast, lunch and dinner matched with a great wine list, craft beers and locally roasted coffee. -

Come and enjoy the hustle, bustle and traditional splendour of a thriving retail market with a warm and friendly atmosphere. The impressive and historic Halifax Borough Market was built between 1891 and 1896 and was officially opened by the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George V and Queen Mary). As a first time visitor to this award-winning market, you could be forgiven for thinking that you had stumbled on to the set of a period TV drama. Decor and atmosphere combine to create a shopping experience that just can't be matched by mundane and soulless out-of-town supermarkets. Alongside the outstanding traditional family butchers and fruit and vegetable stalls which have passed down through generations, are the new stall holders tempting our taste buds with a bounty of exotic produce from the continent. Nor will the markets's fishmongers disappoint. You can treat your inner child with toffees, fudge, boiled sweets, cakes and brandy snaps. Sandwiches, pies, olives and chorizo can be found alongside haberdashers, vibrant flower shops, perfumers, leather goods, books, underwear, CDs, DVDs, hardware, fancy dress and more! With several cafes and coffee shops where you can stop for cuppa and a butty (go on, have cake too) you can easily refuel to carry on shopping. From the exotic to the native, extravagant to inexpensive, the quality of produce on offer remains unsurpassed. The traditional splendour of Halifax Borough Market offers a real destination shopping experience. Open Monday to Saturday 9am - 5pm.
