    An exclusive chance to see some of the costumes designed by Tom Pye for Sally Wainwright’s TV series Gentleman Jack. The series about the life of Anne Lister, was filmed largely at her home of Shibden Hall, managed by Calderdale Museums Service. On display at Bankfield Museum are a number of the costumes and props from the series, worn and used by actors including Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle. At Bankfield you can also see original clothing from the period of Gentleman Jack in the new Fashion Gallery on the top floor. The costumes have been kindly loaned for display by Lookout Point Productions with assistance from designer Tom Pye. FREE admission. Friday 12th July 2019 until Saturday 26th October 2019.

    On Saturday September 14th between Noon and 4pm you have a rare opportunity to see a memorial to Ann Walker, lover of Anne ‘Gentleman Jack’ Lister, which has been locked within Lightcliffe Tower at Lightcliffe Cemetery near Halifax since 1974. There will be guides on hand to direct visitors to the most interesting and important graves connected with the Walker family. Ann Walker died at Cliffe Hill in 1854 and was buried under the pulpit at Old St Matthew’s church, Lightcliffe, Halifax. When the church was demolished in 1974, the charity Friends of Friendless Churches rescued the monuments and memorials and kept them safe within the residual tower, which is now in the charity’s care. Amongst the monuments is the Gothic style plaque remembering Ann Walker. As a part of the Heritage Open Days festival this September, the Friends of Friendless Churches are re-opening the base of the tower to allow visitors to view and pay their respects at Ann’s memorial. This is a free event, but donations towards the upkeep of the tower are gratefully received. There is no need to book.

    A four hour walk from Halifax climbing slowly up Old Bank to Shibden, to recreate Anne Lister's estate in 1832. On 7th May, she returned home from her travels despondent, betrayed by yet one more woman's marriage plans. Then reacquaintance with neighbouring heiress Ann Walker of Lightcliffe changed her life forever. Anne Lister deployed all her considerable skills to enthral and seduce this wealthy young woman - all out of sight of Halifax's prying eyes. Meet Jill Liddington at 11.30am - details of meeting place will be given when tickets are booked. Walking boots/shoes are advised, and bring packed lunch/snacks. The walk includes short readings from Nature's Domain, and ends at 3.30 pm with Q&A plus tea and cake at the Meerside Cafe. Bus back to Halifax. So this is a linear walk.
