Calderdale Museums has one of the best but little known textile collections in the country. There are 17,000 objects, collected from all over the world. The collection began when the museum first opened in 1887. It represents the influence of world textiles on local production as well as how local textiles have been exported around and influenced the world. The collection includes significant objects from Ancient Egypt, The Balkans, China, Japan and the Indian Subcontinent. A range of English embroidery, samplers, costume, court dress, military uniforms, pattern books from West Yorkshire manufacturers and the design archive of Crossley’s Carpets. It represents not just textiles but textile production from spindles to spinning wheels, cards, combs and looms. The new fashion gallery will tell both the story of the production and manufacture of textiles in the local area and how those textiles were then used. This new gallery replaces the 'For King and Country' exhibition on the top floor at Bankfield. 2019 will also see a range of related talks, tours and events. FREE admission. -

The Sowerby Bridge Rushbearing Festival brings you a packed weekend of Rush-related tradition and tomfoolery!
The Rushbearing Festival is the only one of its kind in Yorkshire. Over the course of the weekend, the festival sees the progress of the Rushbearing procession around seven towns and villages, visiting many churches and local hostelries along the way. the focal point of the procession is the sixteen feet high, two-wheeled handsomely decorated and thatched rushcart.
A team of young ladies take turns to ride on top of the cart as it is pulled by sixty local men dressed in Panama hats, white shirts, black trousers and clogs. Accompanying them are a group of supporters in Edwardian dress along with some of the region's finest musicians and Morris dancing teams to provide entertainment for the crowds.
By the nature of this event timings over the weekend may vary slightly!
For full route details for the Rushcart and approximate timings, please visit the Rushbearing website

The Brighouse & Rastrick Band is regarded by many as the best and most consistent ‘public subscription band’ in the world. In its time the majority of premier band championships have been held by ‘Briggus’, most recently becoming National Champion Band of Great Britain in 2017, whilst the band has also attracted a formidable reputation for highly entertaining concerts for both the general public and brass band connoisseur. The band was formed over 130 years ago through public donations given by the townsfolk of the adjacent villages of Brighouse and Rastrick that face each other across the River Calder in West Yorkshire. Today, it still continues to be supported through public subscriptions and its own fundraising efforts. Tickets from £15.75
