Showcasing Calderdale Museums’ fashion and textile collections from ancient Egypt to modern day. Calderdale Museums has one of the best but little known textile collections in the country. There are 17,000 objects, collected from all over the world. The collection began when the museum first opened in 1887. It represents the influence of world textiles on local production as well as how local textiles have been exported around and influenced the world. The collection includes significant objects from Ancient Egypt, The Balkans, China, Japan and the Indian Subcontinent. A range of English embroidery, samplers, costume, court dress, military uniforms, pattern books from West Yorkshire manufacturers and the design archive of Crossley’s Carpets. It represents not just textiles but textile production from spindles to spinning wheels, cards, combs and looms. The new fashion gallery will tell both the story of the production and manufacture of textiles in the local area and how those textiles were then used. This new gallery replaces the 'For King and Country' exhibition on the top floor at Bankfield. 2019 will also see a range of related talks, tours and events. FREE admission.

September 2019 is the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War. Calderdale was directly affected: men and women were conscripted for military and industrial service; industry was placed on a war footing and many workers took on Civil Defence and Home Guard duties. The area did not escape unscathed, there were 11 bombing incidents recorded and 11 people were killed. On 24 December 1944 a German V1 Flying Bomb (commonly known as ‘Doodlebugs’) landed in a field at Little Tooting Farm, Hubberton, Sowerby. Extensive blast damage made the farmhouse uninhabitable for some time and broke windows a mile away. The farmhouse occupants received cuts from broken glass. The photograph shows the Auxiliary Fire Service team, which attended the incident, along with the police and ambulance service. FREE admission. The exhibition runs from Saturday 8th June to Saturday 30th November 2019 .

11.30am All Souls Halifax celebrates 160 years since the church was consecrated with a special service led by Reverend Canon Hilary Barber from Halifax Minster. This is a special year because not only is it 160 years since this amazing church was built by George Gilbert Scott, and conscrated in it's first All Souls Day Service back in 1859 and we are using this special service as an opportunity for reflection on how much the area and society has changed since the Victorian industrial age. There will be refreshments after and a chance to find out more about this beautiful church and it's history. Please come along and meet our dedicated team of volunteers. FREE admission For more details please ring or email Alison Pearce on 07900 685 796 or at apearce@thecct.org.uk

7:30pm “The Fire Of Olympus; or, On Sticking It To The Man” is a brand-new opera by the innovative Yorkshire-based mavericks Radius Opera. A spectacular show, it tells the story of Prometheus and Pandora, and features virtuoso singers together with the digitally combined voices of over 1000 volunteers drawn from choirs across the North of England. In the opera, composed by Yorkshire-based Tim Benjamin, Zeus, the powerful President of Olympus, faces revolution and anarchy, as prankster activists led Prometheus steal his mystical Fire. The dramatic story includes Pandora and her famous “box” of evils, and is set in a world similar to 1960s America, amid anti-war and freedom of speech conflicts. The opera, which is in English, re-imagines the popular 18th century operas of Handel, which contained many memorable tunes and often dealt with themes from Greek and Roman myth. The performance lasts 100 minutes plus interval.
