A younger son of Shibden Hall, he fought in the American Revolutionary War, and was to father one of the most remarkable women of the 19th Century, Anne Lister. David Glover details his long life, from 1752 to 1836, including his complex relationship with his daughters.

    A new exhibition capturing a century of Brighouse, West Yorkshire on canvas and camera, featuring paintings and photographs from Calderdale Museums’ collections, including works by local Brighouse artists Miles Sharp and Stanley Chapman. These works are displayed alongside newly produced photographs by the Halifax Photographic Society, who have recreated scenes from historic artworks of Brighouse to bring up to date the story of everyday life and ongoing change in the town. This exhibition runs from Saturday 19th October 2019 until Monday 20th April 2020 .     Square Chapel, Copper Auditorium, doors 12, start 12.15pm to 1:30 pm Tickets: £10.50 Anne Lister followed a long and winding trail of women, before finding Ann Walker and taking the Sacrament at Holy Trinity / Goodramgate. But the first of those was Eliza Raine. Their relationship went far beyond the dormered room the two young women shared at the Manor School in York, and finally ended at the same asylum Ann Walker was forced to enter. Join author Patricia Hughes at the Copper Auditorium at Square Chapel as she discusses this very important chapter in Anne’s storied past, as described in her book, “The Early Life of Miss Anne Lister and the Curious Tale of Miss Eliza Raine”. About the Author: Patricia Hughes worked with Dorothy Thompson at Birmingham University's Department of Modern History in the UK to decode and translate the coded passages of Anne Lister's vast, detailed journal.

    10am - 8pm Shibden will be staying open until 8pm on Anne Lister's birthday, Friday 3rd April 2020. Anne was born on the 3rd April 1791 and to celebrate there will be tea and birthday cake and a celebratory atmosphere with staff and volunteers on hand to talk all things Anne Lister. Dressing up is most definitely encouraged! (More details to follow in early 2020) The usual admission fees apply. There are no advance bookings, just turn up on the day.

    Join Halifax-based writer Clara Barley, as she discusses her novel, The Moss House, about neighbouring landowners Anne Lister and Ann Walker.

    Barley's fictional re-telling explores how the women's lives became entwined in a passionate, forbidden relationship and retreated to the Moss House, their private sanctuary away from an unaccepting world.

    Barley will discuss where truth meets fiction about Anne Lister - lesbian, diarist, landowner, scholar, traveller and mountaineer, and how she adapted the true story into a novel.

    The talk will be followed by a Q&A.

    Halifax’s only LGBTQ poetry night is back, and we’re holding a spoken word birthday party for our town’s most famous Queer writer. A celebration of the North’s modern LGBTQ poetry scene, headlined by Sez Thomasin, Michelle Dee and Zee Younus at Central Library and hosted by Spoken Queered founder Geneviève L. Walsh.

    May contain adult themes. Age14 + but under 16s should be accompanied by a parent/ guardian
