Join Anne Lister scholar Jill Liddington as she introduces us to Anne Lister and her diaries.

After her death in 1840, silence surrounded Anne Lister & her amazing diary. Outside local Antiquarians, few people knew much about her. Right up until 1984 when the Guardian published an article headed ‘The two million word enigma’. I’d recently moved to Halifax ~ and was soon hooked. Only to discover it wasn’t 2m words but 4 million!

Anne Lister books followed. Yet it was only with Sally Wainwright’s 2019 drama series Gentleman Jack (BBC1/HBO) that Anne Lister won a global following. So what’s this triumph doing for Calderdale?
