    Events are taking place as part of The Halifax Heritage Festival 2021 from Wednesday 8th to Sunday 19th September. Despite the challenges brought by COVID 19 there are plenty of places for you to visit anfd fun activities to get involved with!

    You can enjoy Heritage Walking and Bus Tours; visiting Calderdale Industrial Museum; self-guided tours of Halifax Town Hall; tours of Halifax Minster and its churchyard; Heritage Tours of Victoria Theatre; an art exhibition at All Souls Church; The Halifax Music Heritage Trail; events at the Piece Hall; visits to St Matthew's Chuurchyard at Lightcliffe (resting place of Ann Walker) Lister Lane Cemetery and more!

    6pm The 1835 violent political contest in Halifax became known as the ‘window-breaking election’. Immediately after, ‘mock marriage’ announcements appeared in Yorkshire newspapers. Then in 1836, lurid tales reached Shibden of Anne Lister and Ann Walker being burnt in effigy down in Halifax. Who was behind these pointed public attacks ~ and why? A 2-hour circular early evening walk with short readings from Female Fortune. There are some steep steps. Sorry, no dogs. Guide: Jill Liddington We will use TicketSource https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/calderdale-heritage-walks which appears to be an easy site to use and, if we have to cancel a walk, will provide an automatic refund. The cost of most walks will be £4 inclusive of booking fee but a few are £5 because of extra expenses. The site will open for bookings on Friday 21st May. Groups will be between 16 and 22. Many of our walks start at 2pm and the details of where to meet, including a post code, will be on your ticket. These walks are not really suited to under 13s.

    After their ‘marriage’ in 1834, Ann Walker moved into Shibden. Anne Lister could now begin to realize her coal-mining ambitions. Walker Pit was sunk in 1835, named in honour of Ann. And by 1836, Anne Lister’s grand plans to make Shibden look magnificent began to take shape. A 2½ hour circular afternoon walk, with one steep ascent. Walking shoes or boots are essential. Sorry no dogs.
