Showcasing Calderdale Museums’ fashion and textile collections from ancient Egypt to modern day. Calderdale Museums has one of the best but little known textile collections in the country. There are 17,000 objects, collected from all over the world. The collection began when the museum first opened in 1887. It represents the influence of world textiles on local production as well as how local textiles have been exported around and influenced the world. The collection includes significant objects from Ancient Egypt, The Balkans, China, Japan and the Indian Subcontinent. A range of English embroidery, samplers, costume, court dress, military uniforms, pattern books from West Yorkshire manufacturers and the design archive of Crossley’s Carpets. It represents not just textiles but textile production from spindles to spinning wheels, cards, combs and looms. The new fashion gallery will tell both the story of the production and manufacture of textiles in the local area and how those textiles were then used. This new gallery replaces the 'For King and Country' exhibition on the top floor at Bankfield. 2019 will also see a range of related talks, tours and events. FREE admission.

The Harrison Lord Gallery in Brighouse is opening a new show of paintings by Danny Abrahams on Saturday 18th May. Brighouse artist Danny Abrahams has established himself as one of the UK’s best-loved, most collectible artists and this is his first exhibition in his home town. Meet Danny in person at the opening between 1pm and 2pm. Danny's paintings are hugely popular so this is a great opportunity to see his latest work. Danny commented “Growing up in the eighties, I'm from a generation of kids that played out in the streets. It was a time of innocence, a carefree time filled with fun and adventure. So I use my imagination and fall into a world where summer holidays last forever and snowfalls are over the top of your wellies! Never stop dreaming!!” Art has now become the focal point of Danny's life. As a true Yorkshire man he is influenced by the local beauty of the northern landscape and has been inspired by his many travels around the region. Combining these images with memories of 'growing up' appeals to everyone with a soft spot for nostalgia. The magical sky is a powerful subject in his work. The overall beauty, emptiness, rawness and power of the everyday natural wonder that most of us take for granted, sets the backdrop for many of his romantic works. The exhibition is free to enter and runs for three weeks

The iconic annual 1940’s weekend will once again return Saturday 1st June and Sunday 2nd June and is expected to draw in massive crowds from across the region and beyond. Celebrating the war years Brighouse will host a feast of nostalgic music, entertainment, food and fashion. A collection of vintage vehicles will be on show alongside army vehicles. Brighouse will also host a wide range of wartime demonstrations such as re-enactors parade, living history displays and remembrance services. The hugely popular event will also see the largest vintage market yet. Visitors on Saturday will be able to witness a memorable occasion with a fly past by a Hawker Hurricane from the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial flight. It is understood the flypast will happen in the afternoon, subject to weather conditions and other factors. There will be two stages of amazing singers and entertainers who will take you back to the 40’s era; on Thornton Square and Bradford Road Stages. While music and dancing will take over Bethel Street Car Park and the Park Street Courtyard. Come join in with the jitterbug or you might prefer to dance the Lindy Hop. A full-size replica Spitfire and working Merlin engine will be on display while miniature steam train rides and a fairground will provide plenty of fun for children. The real ale and Pimm’s tent is bound to be a favourite destination as will be the tea, coffee and cake from our NAAFI tent on Commercial Street as well as a section of street food stalls. As well as dancing in the streets all weekend you're invited to dance the night away on Saturday 1st June. Take a sentimental journey down memory lane and don your dancing shoes for the ever popular Saturday Night Dance. The Festival is delighted to welcome back the Ashby Little Big Band and as an extremely special treat they are again joined by vintage vocalist Kitty LaMere who will perform a repertoire of 40’s classics and dance lessons. Due to the popularity of the dance it's moving to a much bigger venue, the Civic Hall in the centre of Brighouse, with ample seating and a full bar. The ticket prices have also been reduced to only £12 so come along and have a go, the ticket price includes a free dance lesson! Dress code is optional but you're positively encouraged to come dressed-up 1940’s style! Events will be held across the town from 10am until 7pm on Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.
