The Pennine hills and valleys around Hebden Bridge have long been popular with visitors. Walking and cycling are popular activities, whether just strolling along a riverside path, or following the stone causeways (“causeys”) that mark old packhorse routes. Britain’s first National Trail, the Pennine Way, passes close by, while the Calderdale Way, a 50-mile (80 km) circular route around the Calder Valley, skirts the town. A growing network of bridleways makes excellent mountain-biking and horse-riding routes, including the Mary Towneley Loop, part of the Pennine Bridleway.
