If you were in Calderdale last August, you could hardly have missed the buzz surrounding Chris Martin’s impromptu gig at the Puzzle Hall Inn, in Sowerby Bridge. The Coldplay superstar surprised local pub-goers with an hour-long acoustic set, just days before his band’s sold-out show in Hull. With fewer than 100 people packed into this community‑run pub, it was one of those once‑in‑a‑lifetime moments that showcased the sheer magic of small live music venues.
Independent Venue Week (26th January – 1st February) is all about shining a light on these small, independently run music venues that keep the UK’s live‑music scene alive. They’re the places where new artists find their footing, promoters learn the ropes, and local audiences get to experience something real, raw and memorable. Throughout the week, you’ll find hundreds of different live events taking place across the country, and lots taking place in Calderdale! Check out the IVW events page to find out more.
Calderdale has always had a strong grassroots music culture, and this year’s IVW highlights some of the borough’s most loved spaces. Times have been tough—especially with rising costs and changes in how people spend their nights out—but these venues continue to champion live music with passion and resilience.
The Puzzle Hall Inn in Sowerby Bridge has had quite a journey—from its beginnings as a 17th‑century private residence to becoming a beloved local pub known for its buzzing live‑music scene, especially the legendary jazz nights that kicked off in the 1980s. When it closed in 2016 after falling into disrepair, the community refused to let it fade away; they rallied together, raised over £150,000, and bought the place themselves! Today, after plenty of refurbishment and a whole lot of love, the Puzzle is thriving again as a creative hub full of live music, spoken word, and friendly faces.

The Grayston Unity has grown from being known as the UK’s smallest music venue – just 18 seats in its old Wesley Court home – to becoming a cherished cultural hub in Halifax, now settled into a larger space on Horton Street. It’s hosted an impressive array of artists over the years, from Nadine Shah to Working Men’s Club, and has kept its community‑driven, arts‑loving spirit intact even as it expanded to a 110‑capacity basement venue. With its mix of live music, talks, and a warm, cozy bar atmosphere, it remains one of Halifax’s go‑to spots for discovering new sounds in a welcoming setting.

The Blind Pig is a lively, eclectic music venue right in the heart of Sowerby Bridge, known for its fun, anything‑goes energy and a long history of putting on live bands, DJs, and packed‑out weekend gigs. Described as a speakeasy‑style bar with a modern twist, it’s hosted thousands of acts over the years and built a loyal crowd who love its intimate 80‑capacity upstairs venue, enthusiastic team, and famously welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re there for rock night, an open mic session, or just a good boogie, it’s the kind of place where the music’s loud, the crowd’s friendly, and the good times come easily.

The Meandering Bear is a much‑loved independent bar that opened in 2019, created by the same team behind the Grayston Unity, and it’s quickly become a favourite hangout thanks to its relaxed vibe, great beer selection, and locally sourced food. Inspired by the quirky true tale of a bear escaping from Halifax Zoo before WWI, it blends character, good humour, and community‑mindedness into a snug, modern space just steps from the Piece Hall. Regular jazz sessions, quizzes, and vinyl nights add to the friendly buzz, making it the sort of place where you can pop in for a quiet drink and end up staying for the atmosphere.
