SUMMARY:Who Built Hebden Bridge? – an exhibition by Hebden Bridge Local History Society
DESCRIPTION:1st March to 25th March at Hebden Bridge Town Hall foyer and café area during their opening hours. \nThe society has been researching the growth of Hebden Bridge and some of the problems created by its development after it officially became a town in 1866. Who built the walls\, the homes\, mills and chapels ? Who built the water supplies\, the drains and the sewers? Who were the workers? Who were the architects? Who provided the finance? \nIf you live in Hebden Bridge and know the answers to any of the above questions for your property\, or have ancestors who built Hebden Bridge\,  please bring the information to add to the research\, or contact the Society via their website or facebook page. \nThe Hebden Bridge Local History Society was formed in 1949 and is a section of the Hebden Bridge Literary and Scientific Society which celebrated its hundredth anniversary in 2005. \nThe Society organises a winter programme from September to March on Wednesdays at the Methodist Church Hall in Hebden Bridge at 7:30 pm. Summer walks and other activities are arranged for the rest of the year. More info \nThe Society’s archive and library is housed at the Birchcliffe Centre\, Hebden Bridge. The collection is available for members to use on the second Wednesday and fourth Saturday of each month. \nOne of the many projects the Society is currently working on is the Gibson and Sutcliffe papers\, a collection given to us in 2001. The materials had been lying in a room at Croft House in Hebden Bridge\, undisturbed for over 50 years. One collection belonged to Abraham Gibson of Greenwood Lee and the other to Sutcliffe & Sutcliffe\, architects. \nMembers of the Society are also transcribing gravestones in Heptonstall churchyard\, providing easy access to local information for genealogists. \n
