For the 32nd year in succession at Square Chapel, The Waits – five players plus singer Deborah Catterall – perform medieval and renaissance Christmas music on a wide range of ancient instruments, including shawms, sackbuts, recorders, crumhorns and bagpipes plus the early violin, guitar and harp. The Waits were formed in the 1970s, as a recreation of the city band of York as it was in Tudor times. The band has performed throughout the UK, in several European countries and in the USA. Its recordings have included music from the life and times of Richard III, Henry VIII and York’s most notorious citizen, Guy Fawkes. The Waits have also released several discs of early Christmas music from England and the Continent.
