SUMMARY:Poetry at the Museum: Michael Crowley and Chris Preddle
DESCRIPTION:7pm – 9pm \nContinuing our series of Poetry @ The Museum\, we are delighted to welcome back Michael Crowley who will be reading from his collection First Fleet.  Joining Mike\, is Chris Preddle\, another local and established poet who recently published his third collection The May Figures came from Eyewear in 2022; his second was Cattle Console Him (2010).  His translations Sappho: Songs and Poems also came out in 2022. \nBetween 1787 and 1850 over 160\,000 convicts were sent from Britain to penal colonies in Australia. First Fleet tells the story of the first eleven ships that sailed from Portsmouth on a 15\,000 mile voyage to establish the first penal settlement at Sydney Cove. Drawing on surviving journals the poems inhabit the imaginary voices of convicts\, crew\, marines\, and Aboriginal people to give voice to the poverty left behind and the ‘starvation years’ they faced when they reached Australia. \nCrowley’s uncompromising\, spirited and highly original collection addresses issues of exile\, identity\, class and rebellion\, incorporating meditative lyrics on personal and political themes and visionary re-imaginings of the convict colonisation of Australia\, triumphantly fulfilling his “impossible ambition” of entering history to give voice to the silenced and the dead.’   – Steve Ely \nMichael will also be holding a workshop on Sunday 24 September. \nTickets £7 / £5
