Leeds Kirkgate Market v Halifax Borough Market – Free Walking Tour!
Two iconic Yorkshire markets. One unforgettable day out.
As part of Heritage Open Days, you’re invited on a limited-edition walking tour that dives into the stories, architecture and quirks of Leeds Kirkgate Market and Halifax Borough Market — both designed by the legendary Leeming brothers! The brothers worked on buildings locally, across the country and abroad. They had a practice in Halifax before moving to London to work on the Admiralty and War Offices.
Halifax Borough Market opened in 1896, and was the inspiration for the grand entrance building at Leeds Kirkgate Market which opened a few years later in 1904.
The Leeds part of the tour starts at 9.30am by the M&S Clock in Leeds Kirkgate Market, and ends about 10.30am.
Then make your own way to Halifax Train Station to reconvene for 12.00pm (meet at the station entrance). Then we’ll explore the history of its markets, up to the Borough Market. The tour should finish around 13.00pm.
