Hebble Trail Walk – Part of Anne Lister Festival 2025

Price: £7.50

Event description

This year’s Festival is even more packed with incredible events and activities for you to attend and take part in –over 70 in fact! –all, in 2025 to remember Halifax’s own Anne Lister on her 234th birthday!

The Festival runs from Saturday 29th March–Sunday 6th April (inclusive), and again incorporates the Anne Lister Birthday Week (ALBW).

10.30am – 12.30pm

Join Halifax Heritage Tours (HHT) on their Hebble Trail walk! This is a linear walk, starting at Salterhebble Basin and following the route of the old Halifax Branch Canal. The walk will take you towards Bailey Hall in Halifax Town Centre, traversing the canal’s length as the route climbs 100ft over 1½ miles alongside the Hebble Brook.

Listen to how the canal became vital to the survival of the industrial heritage of Halifax in its role as a manufacturing town. Having had mills along the brook’s bank since the 1500s, the industrial revolution generated the need for heavier machinery together with large amounts of fuel and raw materials.

Hear the story of how the canal came to be built under the direction of resident engineer Thomas Bradley. Learn how the town’s merchants and famous investors, among them John Waterhouse and our very own Anne Lister funded the build to high specification using a pumphouse and side ponds, serving as a method of water conservation, despite concerns from mill owners.

A new walk on the historical heritage of Halifax which is not to be missed!

NB: HHT stress that walkers will be following pathways/tracks which may be unmade and steep in places.  Suitable footwear and suitable clothing are strongly advised. It is also advisable to carry a bottle of water with

you and to take a toilet break before the tour starts as there is no opportunity for this during the walk.

Any children under 18 booked on the tour must be accompanied by an adult with a ticket for the event and will remain the responsibility of that parent or guardian at all times.

You will find the full programme festival here.
