Our oldest civic building, designed by Sir Charles Barry, is a purpose-built Italianate Town Hall which was almost erected somewhere else, and its construction was plagued by strikes. Lots of unusual tales: when was a baby born in the structure? Where did the paintings at the top of the staircase come from? And what do the figures on the exterior of the tower signify? And of course, it incorporated a Police station with prison cells!
