Halifax Chamber Choir perform The armed man and Magnificat

Price: £12

Event description

7.30pm

Halifax Chamber Choir perform ‘The Armed man’ (Choral suite) by Karl Jenkins and Magnificat by John Rutter.

“The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace” by Karl Jenkins is a powerful and dramatic work which was commissioned by Leeds Royal Armouries Museum and dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo conflict in 1999. It is essentially an anti-war piece. Halifax Chamber Choir will perform the Choral Suite which was arranged by Karl Jenkins for chamber choir and is based on the Catholic Mass with the addition of a setting of a poem by Rudyard Kipling, “Hymn Before Action” which takes the form of a prayer by troops to God and to Mary on the eve of battle.

John Rutter who is best known for his choral settings of Christmas carols and music, made the setting of the Magnificat in 1990. The extended composition in seven movements is based on the Latin text of the Magnificat, interspersed with “Of a Rose, a lovely Rose“, an anonymous medieval carol text which likens the Virgin Mary to a Rose, from which arise the branches which will save mankind.

Halifax Chamber Choir will be directed by Aljosa Skorja and accompanied on the organ in Halifax Minster by Professor David Baker.

Admission on the door: £12.00 or in advance from https://halifaxchamberchoir.co.uk/
