John Smeaton and the Calder Navigation – Lecture by Lesley Taylor & Shirley Levon, researchers and authors
John Smeaton was employed by the Calder Navigation Commissioners based in Halifax to superintend and construct a navigation beyond Wakefield up the Calder valley. This talk will reveal the many difficulties encountered in launching the project and starting the work as recorded in a range of source materials, including Smeaton’s detailed journal for the years 1760 to 1763
