Friday Night Live @ Square Chapel is a platform for emerging and local musicians to showcase their talents.
Act 1 – leo. – Wistful instrumentation, harmonies, nostalgia and vulnerability collide in the sound of leo. and his passionate performances. Having undergone a rigorous formal classical training, Leo Pereira left his native Portugal for the UK in 2019. He has given us a series of successful releases over the last few years, including Despair and Letters From Dreamland. His melodic, whimsical style and personality has become the nucleus for a strong fan community, which grows with each performance. From his songwriting, which has drawn millions of streams, leo. crafts a live show which connects intimately with the audience, supplemented by a range of instruments and backings.
Act 2 – Joe Doonan is an established singer-songwriter hailing from Leeds, West Yorkshire. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Foy Vance, Passenger and Springsteen, Joe’s songs tell real-life stories of hope, loss and love. Under the current mentorship of a number of multi-platinum selling and Emmy Award winning song-writers from across the globe, Joe is working tirelessly towards releasing his first solo EP which promises to be his best work to date. Some of his mentors include the likes of: Paddy Byrne (Tom Grennon, Paoloma Faith), Paul Statham (Dido, Matt Cardle, Simple Minds), Shelly Poole (Jack Savoretti, Gary Barlow, Janet Jackson) and Rob Wells (Adam Lambert, Ariana Grande). Joe previously released his singles ‘Dancing In Paradise’ and ‘Beginning At Every End’ (working with Producer Dom Bennison and Pidgeon Detectives Producer Andy Hawkins). He will soon be returning to the studio to record his latest body of work, due for release in 2023.
Act 3 – Before Breakfast – explore feminist issues through the telling of personal stories – fusing their classical knowledge and rich arrangements with raw expression.Gina and Lucy’s music has always been beautiful, though is often layered with feminine discomfort. An uneasy web of harmonies and relentless piano, intricate cello and expressively haunting vocals run through their back catalogue and feature on their debut album I Could Be Asleep If It Weren’t For You – Released January 28th 2022. The four-piece have toured with gold certified Sony artist Tokio Myers and Mercury Prize nominated Bella Union artist C. Duncan, performing at venues such as Shepherds Bush Empire, Manchester Albert Hall, The Sage, Scala, Band On the Wall, Thekla and The Rescue Rooms.
“Alt-folk with some deeply personal lyricism, words that touch on personal independence, feminism, and more.” – CLASH“Easily one of the best bands to ever come out of Sheffield, ‘Buddleia’ is a diamond amongst a back catalogue of other precious gems” – BBC Introducing Sheffield
