5.45pm: Arrive for supper & 6.45pm Talk
While many know the Yorkshire landscapes that inspired Emily Brontë’s novel, few realise the deep connections between Calderdale and Wuthering Heights.
Join notable historian David Glover at historic Holdsworth House Hotel in Halifax for an evening exploring Emily Brontë’s time in Calderdale, West Yorkshire and the real-life locations that may have influenced her writing. The evening includes a delicious two-course supper.
In 1838-9, Emily Brontë lived at Law Hill, Southowram, working as a schoolmistress. Could the house’s builder, Jack Sharp, have inspired the dark and brooding Heathcliff? Was the now-lost High Sunderland Hall—just a short distance away—the true architectural model for Wuthering Heights? And did the legendary Shibden Hall, home of Anne Lister, appear in Brontë’s writing under another name?
Notable historian and public speaker David Glover (pictured), of the Halifax Antiquarian Society and the Halifax Civic Trust, will reveal little-known stories and explore how Halifax’s landscapes and historic buildings shaped Emily Brontë’s literary masterpiece.
Whether you’re a Brontë enthusiast, a literature lover or searching for Wuthering Heights filming locations, this talk is not to be missed.
