The Brutish Multitude Theatre Company presents Michael Crowley’s play Warp and Weft, which dramatises the events of 1842, showing at Halifax Playhouse from 21st to 23rd March.
Join us at Basin Stones to hear the actor who plays Ben Rushton deliver a rousing monologue from the play. This will be followed by a selection of Chartist anthems sung by Jennifer Reid. Along the route, Michael will take us through a brief history of the chartist movement.
Ben Rushton was a handloom weaver who lived in Ovenden, Halifax. He became a leading figure in the chartist movement in the 19th century and was known across the West Riding for his inspiring oration. Supporters of the Peoples’ Charter would often assemble at Basin Stones to hear him. It was here, in August 1842, that Rushton rallied forces during the general strike that engulfed the north.
This gentle ascent is roughly 30-40 mins; sturdy footwear is advisable. Parking on the road, east side of the pub.
Why not help us recreate this important historical event by dressing for the occasion in 1840s attire (optional)?
