This will be the sixth solo exhibition by local watercolour artist Jane Austin in the extraordinary Grade 1 listed Gothic church, an architectural gem of Halifax and part of our Heritage Festival 2022.
This new collection of original artwork is accompanied by Jane’s heritage prints and Shibden Collection.
The art reflects the rich industrial history of our town, expanding on Jane’s current exhibition at Bankfield Museum, a stroll through Akroydon Park.
“I am no historian but I appreciate the rich visual tapestry around me. Painting purely in watercolour this exhibition demonstrates how I am attracted by the way light brings life to inanimate objects, a world of colour. Forget the idea of a blackened mill town in the past, this town sings with colour in the here and now in our tangle of green valleys and hilltops.”
All Souls Church was commissioned by Colonel Edward Akroyd, who built one of the first model villages in England for his mill workers, both of which were designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The old manor house was later donated to become Bankfield Museum. You can find more about the festival events at All Souls here on Facebook.
