Trail and road running races

Start/Finish

Depending on where your start or finish is held you will require permission from the landowner. If this is a public place, such as a park or a road, you would need to apply for permission from the Council.

Public Rights of Way (PROWs)

Where the route of the race is restricted to off-road PROWs, you may not need permission, although you should still get in touch with the Council’s Events & Film Office, supplying your route and risk assessment. This allows the opportunity for checks with partners and colleagues as appropriate.

Private footpaths, permissive ROW’s and ‘open access land’

If your route takes in privately owned footpaths, permissive ROWs, or ‘open access land’ you must get permission from the landowner before proceeding.

Road running races complying with the Highway Code

If a race route takes in or crosses sections of public adopted highway but is organised in compliance with the Highway Code, a permit may not be required from the Council. However, you should still get in touch with the Council’s Events & Film Office, supplying your route and risk assessment.  This offers the opportunity for us to check with colleagues and partners.  Further information which will help you distinguish if a running race may comply with the highway code, can be found within the Event Application Guide.

Road running races which may/will not comply with the Highway Code

Where a race on Council land and/or public adopted highway, will not comply with the Highway Code, you will need to apply for permission.
