Clifton Beck Walk, Brighouse

This is a great child-friendly walk from Little Legs. With sections of the Brighouse Boundary Walk and the Calderdale Way, this walk covers varied ground, but within a short distance. It’s a great route for blackberry picking and there’s a disused railway line to discover – look out for clues and the kids can play detective.

Clifton Beck Walk

Directions

📍Start at Thornhills Beck Lane, HD6 4AH

  1. Walk down Thornhills Beck Lane and cross the ford on the footbridge and continue along the road. It’s not busy but there’s no pavement so please watch out for traffic.

  1. Just before the viaduct, take the path turning left. This is a section of the Brighouse Boundary Walk, running parallel to Clifton Beck and Bradford Road through woods and fields. Look out for wild raspberries and blackberries growing here in summer.

  1. Just before a wooden bridge across the stream, turn right.

  1. When you reach the houses, go straight on up the steps and then bear left to follow the road. At the top of the slope, follow the path next to the last house.

  1. After a long wooden fence, turn right onto a narrow path climbing up the bank to the old railway line. The tracks are gone now but you can see where it used to be. Cross over and straight on towards a road.

  1. Turn right onto a lane, following a wooden Calderdale Way signpost.

  1. The lane climbs a hill to a farm. Turn left through the gate to the bungalow opposite – the footpath runs along the edge of the garden and through a gate into a field.

  1. Bear right to follow the edge of the field downhill to a stile in the bottom right corner. Then continue straight through two more fields, with great views over Brighouse.

  1. From the final field, take a narrow path along a hedge up towards Thornhill Beck Lane. Turn right and follow the road back downhill to the start.
