Details

A magical destination like no other, The Piece Hall in the heart of Halifax will be bursting with festive cheer from 25 November until 31 December. The Grade I Listed former cloth hall will provide a striking backdrop for a series of seasonal events that includes a specialist Yorkshire Christmas Market, creative craft workshops with a Georgian twist, an original light installation and grand Spiegeltent, showcasing live cabaret, comedy, music, storytelling and performances for all the family.

In the central open-air piazza, a 30ft Christmas tree will be the place to meet before browsing the festive market that will feature Yorkshire makers and producers, selling unique gifts and treats, before exploring the variety of resident shops and feast on heartwarming food and drink from the pop-up vendors.

For the first time in Halifax, a Spiegeltent will take centre stage at The Piece Hall from 15 December until New Years’ Eve , providing a very special intimate venue for an eclectic programme of storytelling, family shows, live music, stand-up comedy and late-night cabaret. A Spiegeltent, or ‘mirror tent’, is a round wooden structure 20 meters in diametre , lavishly decorated inside with mirrors and glass, velvet and brocade, that will become the perfect place for the festive celebrations.

Artists confirmed for the Spiegeltent programme include:

High-end glamour, joyful satire and creative cabaret from House of Burlesque, featuring the Queen of provocateurs, Tempest Rose. The innovative and bold show from the UK's top burlesque house is strong and sassy for the discerning voyeur.

A brand-new family stage show featuring the wonderful characters from the BAFTA award winning CBeebies show Sarah & Duck will come to life in Halifax.

Writer and comedian Adam Kay, known for his dark re-imaginings of songs including the 2008 YouTube comedic reworking of the Jam classic ‘London Underground’ which has had over 4 million views alone.

Moulettes, a Brighton-based British band of multi-instrumentalists with 2-part harmony female vocals, amplified Cello, Auto-Harp, Electric Guitar, Drums, Bass and Synths and samples woven into an incomparable alt.pop/rock/ folk universe

Leeds-based writer Matthew Bellwood who will open the Spiegeltent each morning with A Selection of Stories From Around The World, with intimate and imaginative storytelling performances.

For families there will be a range of creative activities including making Georgian-style lanterns and festive crafts, in the specially-created industrious elves workshop. Adults will have the opportunity to be artistic and make their own gifts and textile wreaths and meet the makers whose work is exhibited in the Piece Hall Gallery, watch demonstrations and have a go.

A bespoke light installation from acclaimed local artists - illustrator Chris Mould from Bradford and Matt Howarth, animator and Artist in Residence at Dean Clough Galleries, Halifax, will bring the building to life. ‘The Night Market’ will tell the tale of an enchanted trading place, with characters and light bringing the building to life from dusk each evening.

The festivities will finishing with a New Year’s Eve celebration taking over The Piece Hall’s courtyard for a superb season finale that includes a special Comedy Club in the Spiegeltent, pop up food and drink vendors, live music, DJs and entertainment.
