đ Why Calderdale is LGBTQ+âFriendly
Historic Queer Legacy
Calderdale is the home of AnneâŻListerâwidely regarded as âthe first modern lesbian.â Her life at Shibden Hall, her coded diaries, her marriage to AnnâŻWalker and her portrayal in the BBC drama ‘Gentleman Jack’, have made Halifax a site of cultural and historic importance for LGBTQ+ heritage.
A Recognized “Queer Capital”
HebdenâŻBridge has earned a reputation as the UKâs âlesbian capitalââwith around 9% of residents identifying as LGBTQ+, triple the national averageâmaking it one of Britainâs most LGBTQ-inclusive small towns.
Authentic Festivals with Impact
Local celebrations like the AnneâŻLister Festival and Happy Valley Pride are massive events in the Calderdale calendar and focus on heritage, arts, activism, and inclusivity.

Shibden Mill Inn, a 17th-century former mill in Shibden Valley, offers award-winning dining, boutique rooms, and scenic walks near Halifax. Known for its historic charm and modern comforts, it was once owned by Ann Walker, partner of Anne Lister, adding a unique cultural and LGBTQ+ heritage link to this picturesque destination.
The LordâŻNelsonâŻInn in Luddenden is a charming GradeâŻII listed, 17thâcentury coaching house opposite StâŻMaryâs Church, famed for BranwellâŻBrontĂ«âs visits and hosting Englandâs first lending library.
