What's On In Calderdale August 31st - September 2nd

Friday 31st August:

The Norland Scarecrow Festival begins today and runs through both Saturday, Sunday and into Monday. This year’s theme is scarecrows beginning with the letter ‘N’. Enjoy exploring a trail of around 80 scarecrows in this beautiful Yorkshire village.

At Victoria Theatre Halifax you can laugh your way into the weekend with Dick & Liddy’s Comedy Club. Stand ups such as John Bishop, Alan Carr, Ross Noble and Michael McIntyre performed here early in their careers. Don't miss this chance to get seriously close to serious stand-up talent. (8.30pm, £11.75).

You can once again Chow Down at The Piece Hall’s monthly market of independent food pop-ups, ale, cocktails, live music and DJs. (Friday & Saturday 11am - 10pm / Sunday 11am - 7pm FREE entry).

Saturday 1st September:

The only one of its kind in Yorkshire; the Rushbearing Festival returns, bringing you a packed weekend of Rush-related tradition and tomfoolery! Over the course of the weekend, the festival sees the progress of the Rushbearing procession around several towns and villages, visiting many churches and local hostelries along the way. The focal point of the procession is the sixteen feet high, two-wheeled handsomely decorated and thatched rush cart and there is a plethora of other entertainment for you to enjoy, including a craft market, mumming play, morris and sword dancing, live music, charity stalls and more!

The 4th Annual Todmorden Food Festival takes place in Pollination Square, Todmorden from 11am. All the exhibitors are local producers aiming at quality and reaffirm Todmorden as a ‘foodie destination. With food, fun, glamour, and people watching – come along and enjoy yourselves!

At Westgate Arcade in Halifax you can meet Birds of Prey from the Wise Owl Birds of Prey Sanctuary 10am – 4pm, with live music from (very appropriately!) Birds & Beasts from 12.30-2.30pm.

Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-Batwalk! Visit the Cromwell Bottom Local Nature Reserve for a batty exploration. Bring a torch and warm clothes. No dogs on this walk, please. (Meet in the car park for 7.30pm. Contact Robin Dalton for further information on 07712 867619).

Sunday 2nd September;

Rushbearing, The Norland Scarecrow Festival and Chow Down all continue today.

Join Calderdale Heritage Walks to explore Victorian Halifax, looking at some of the impressive buildings from that period. (Meet David Nortcliffe at 2.15 pm at Halifax Town Hall, by the notice board, £3).

Take a free Taster Tour of Todmorden Town Hall. Meet at 2pm opposite the Town Hall pediment on Halifax Road, OL14 5AQ.
