Calderdale's market towns and villages offer an eclectic range of annual festivals and events, many of which are deeply rooted in the traditional life of the area.
Traditional mummers' plays are performed each Good Friday in Heptonstall and Hebden Bridge and there's a popular Duck Race in Hebden Bridge on Easter Monday. Mytholmroyd hosts the World Dock Pudding Championships every April and The Old Bridge Inn at Ripponden; an Annual Pork Pie Competition. May sees the Pennine Spring Music Festival in Heptonstall, Todmorden's Carnival and in Hebden Bridge, the Burlesque Festival.
June brings the Brighouse 1940's Weekend and Hebden Bridge Handmade Parade. Summer is truly festival and show season in Calderdale, with the Hebden Bridge Arts Festival and Vintage Car Weekend, the Halifax Festival, agricultural shows in Halifax and Todmorden, Brighouse Charity Gala and Halifax Food and Drink Festival taking centre stage.
In early autumn enjoy the South Pennines Walk & Ride Festival, the Norland Scarecrow Festival, the Sowerby Bridge Rushbearing Festival, (not to be missed - this event is unique in Yorkshire!) Brighouse Arts Festival, Halifax Heritage Festival and the Ted Hughes Festival. Be spooked by Halloween events, oohh and ahh at bonfires and firework displays, then turn your attention to Christmas celebrations across the borough.
